5 Craft Businesses You Can Start

5 Craft Businesses You Can Start

Author: Aldar Nagy

Many people spend hours making various crafts for friends and family and have naturally wondered if they might be able to make money from them as well. The answer is yes if you have a product that people want, offered at the right price, and that you make available in places your likely customers will look. Here are 5 crafts you can make at home that have the potential to become a moneymaking business.

1. Holiday Ornaments – Why not start a business making and selling holiday ornaments? You could spend the first nine months of the year making your products and the last three selling them. You could sell on consignment with gift stores and other retail establishments. Or, you could rent a kiosk at a shopping mall and sell them yourself.

2. Special Occasion Gifts – Weddings, baby and bridal showers, bar mitzvahs, anniversary parties, and family reunions all have one thing in common – they all have a need for little (or not so little) gifts that are passed out to the attendees. If you have the imagination and design skills, why not put them to good use making and selling gifts to the organizers of these events? Market your products on E-Bay, your own website, in wedding magazines and catalogs, and by sending samples to those who cater to the same customers already. For example, a jewelry store that sells wedding and engagement rings might agree to pass out your brochure if they like what you offer.

3. Jewelry – If you have a passion for designing and making your own jewelry, turning your talent into a business might be the next logical step for you. Some designers stick with certain themes such as butterflies or roses, while others offer a variety of styles for only a couple items such as bracelets, necklaces, or earrings. You may also decide you only want to work in certain mediums such as silver, gold, beads, or precious stones. Your choices are as endless as the designs you can come up with.

4. Stuffed Toys – There are very few houses in America where you would not be able to find at least a couple of stuffed toys, and houses with children are likely to have dozens. Stuffed toys are bought by parents, grandparents, teenagers, and children. They are bought as gifts for others or to be kept by the buyer. If you can design and make a unique or desirable stuffed animal or toy, this might be an ideal business idea for you.

5. Candle Making – Making candles is a specialized talent that takes practice and skill but can be profitable if you set yourself apart and offer designs not available elsewhere. The number of potential customers is enormous since many people not only buy candles for themselves, but also buy them as gifts for others. You could offer your own unique designs on consignment at gift and other retail stores, on your own website, in catalogs, at art and craft fairs, or even on E-Bay.
